HAPPY IWD -----> International Women's Day!

Happy Tuesday! It's not just an ordinary day that comes after Monday. Today is International Women's Day! I personally celebrate being a woman everyday but that's just me! :-) Anyways... lets take a look at the past... and be happy we are where we are today. It's never over, we continue to strive towards equality each day.

1. Property Ownership

One of the first steps toward equal rights for women in the United States was the enactment of laws giving married women the right to own and manage property. Before then, marriage meant giving everything to your husband. As is noted in the Law Library of Congress, the 1848 New York Married Women's Property Act became a model for change nationwide.

2. The Right to Vote

After years of protests and petitions by the women's suffrage movement, in 1920 the 19th Amendment to the Constitution gave women throughout the United States the right to vote.

3. Jury Service

As women's right historian and sociology professor Holly McCammon chronicles, it was not until the 1960s that all 50 states had laws allowing women to serve on juries, and in 1975 the Supreme Court ruled that gender-based discrimination in selecting jurors is unconstitutional. As a result, now everyone has the right to try to get out of jury duty.

4.Equal Rights

Congress passed the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 as part of a series of initiatives aimed at ending racial discrimination in the United States. Shortly before the final vote, women were also added as a protected group, a soon-to-be revolutionary amendment that prompted the unsuspecting male congressmen to joke about "ladies day in the House."

5. Contraception

In 1916, nurse and women's health crusader Margaret Sanger was arrested in New York for distributing birth control devices, which were then illegal under both state and federal law. The legal right to purchase contraceptives was not established in the U.S. until 1965, when the Supreme Court's ruling in Griswold v. Connecticut established the right to privacy.

6. Abortion

Abortion had been legal in the U.S. before the mid-nineteenth century, when states began passing laws against dangerous poisons used in the procedure. The 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade cited the right to privacy as grounds for placing a constitutional limit on anti-abortion laws.

7. Sexual Harrassment

For years, a woman had no legal recourse against employers who pressured them for sexual favors in order to get or keep a job. That changed with a series of Supreme Court cases starting in 1975. Congress later strengthened this protection with the Civil Rights Act of 1991.

8. Maternity Leave

The rise of women in the workforce also called attention to the fact that the law allowed employers to fire women because they were pregnant or needed time to care for a newborn. The 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act made this illegal, while the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 required employers to provide up to 12 weeks of parental leave for both mothers and fathers.

9. The Right to Go Topless

In 1992, two women arrested for public indecency challenged a New York statute that allowed men to be shirtless in public but made it a criminal act for women. The state's courts agreed that that the law was discriminatory on its face, but not all of the other states have followed suit. [Reference 9]

10. The Right to Wear Pants

Laws against wearing gender-inappropriate clothing have a long history going back to ancient times, and some survive to this day--except in France, where in early 2013 the government minister for women's rights nullified the two-hundred-year-old Paris law that required women to get police permission before wearing pants.

Birchbox no. 2

Lovely little box o' makeup came to my door right by the lovely hallmark holiday; V-Day!

I was surprised at the samples this time because they were just what I was looking for, I need to start taking better care of my skin. I've noticed that the harsh temperatures of WI have really dried out my face. I have had a lot of stress lately, it shows... especially under my eyes! It looks like my eyes are taking a long vacation with all those bags!

The 2 stand out items in this box;
1. REN - Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask (AMAZING)
2. Marcelle- New age 8 in 1 power serum
Both products together left my skin, so soft and really moisturized. I really like the light and easy to use mask. No mess, no thick paste, and felt like it was actually working into the pores.

The POP! Beauty lipstick was okay. I like Matte finish but this color was just too bubble gum pink looking for me. I tried to wear it a few times but just felt like it was not me.

The Oscar De La Renta Parfum is really pretty, and smells good. I would not buy it in a full bottle though. I feel like it might be too much for me. It is borderline: Hi I just walked through the whole perfume isle. I only use one spray and it lasts forever!

L'Oreal Oil hair mask- Did not try yet... but I will eventually. Busy schedule lately!

Leave for FL in 3 day!
Adios cold weather --- HELLO SUNSHINE!

Being mom

I had a dream last night that I was in a terrible car crash, a bus had hit me head on. It was frightening enough to have woke me from my sleep, at 3am. I don't usually have dreams like this and it really shook me up. I was wondering what my mind was telling me. Was this a direct sign of something going on in my life? could it be a way of a higher power telling me to go with my instincts? Was it suppose to wake me up to the realization that life is so sacred, and not to be taken for granted?

After I woke, I heard my daughter coughing and she came in and said mama can I sleep in here with you. I let her climb in under the blankets and she fell fast asleep next to me. I stared at her peacefulness, and her small hand on my arm. I thanked god that my life has been blessed with two amazing, and intelligent girls. I don't know if all other aspects of my life are going in the right direction at this moment but I am certain, that being a mother, a single mother at that is rewarding, stressful, and beautiful. Without them I would not be whole, I would not be happy. They are the light of my life. Hold your children, tell them you love them every moment you can. Nothing else matters. No amount of money, or material items can ever replace unconditional love and being called mom.

Disney on Ice is Magical

This past weekend was a special time for Julianna (my 3 year old) and I. We got to see the very beautiful and magical Disney on Ice show. It was downtown at the Bradley center, in Milwaukee. It was packed with all these little princess like children. In their special dresses, waving their magical light up wands. We had decent seats, and she even sat through the entire show. I was really surprised by the performances and all the extras that went into the stage settings. I loved the Cinderella carriage, and the castle. Julianna was really excited when she saw the Rapunzel part. Although I did splurge and buy her a light up wand for $18 dollars and a snow cone for $12, we had a great mommy and daughter date. :-)

Rating it 5- *****

(The only disappointment was that they did not have Elsa, and Anna from Frozen.)

Easy 6 ingredient crock pot - Italian Sausage with Tortellini

I had a craving for some really good pasta with a spicy kick yesterday so I scanned Pintrest for some crock pot meals. I came across this one and WOW, it was the best and most simple recipe I found.
I added a few extra ingredients to suit my taste buds. I love how all the flavors compliment each other so well. I found that it was a little "soupy" but it only take 3 hours on low for my crock pot. I used the 1/3 less fat cream cheese. It would be great served with Italian garlic bread. I added minced garlic, some sliced up onions and some onion powder to mine.

Minestrone soup

Happy Tuesday!
I had a work crock pot party on Monday and decided to make a nice warm soup. The theme is either soups or sandwiches and we each pick a Monday out of the month to bring something to share. I made enough for roughly 20 people. The recipe was simple and easy which being a mom of 2, is exactly what I look for in a recipe. I did add a little to this and obviously had to double it. Garlic salt, onion powder, and ground pepper.

It got great reviews from all who tried it.

MY 1st BIRCH BOX

Well....it finally arrived my very first BIRCH BOX! It was very exciting to see it on my kitchen table when I got home from work on Friday. I will tell you what I liked the best from the box and please share your experiences with subscription boxes. I really enjoy feedback and ratings of these types of things.

HOORAY!

It was like Christmas all over again! I opened it up in a hurry and tried it all on.. First the lotion, which is a beautifully scented, thick lotion perfect for my dried WI hands. It is made by Soap & Paper Factory ($18). Next was the Dr. Lipp Balm which was thick and did not come out very well at first. But once I tried it I was like yes! it is perfect because it has a nice shine to it and it moisturizes. I like how small it is, so it's easy to throw in your pocket ($17). Obliphica Professional Seaberry hair serum was exactly what I need for this time of year. My hair is long, coarse and dry from this -21 degree temps we have in WI. I loved that this smelled like berries, and it was not greasy. It smoothed out my frizz and made my hair glisten ($38). I was a little nervous for Eyeko Fat liquid liner. It looked like a sharpie/marker, but it was so easy to use, and went on perfectly. The tip of it did not move and it stayed on for most of the night... I would say 5 hours ($16). Last but definitely my favorite item was a sample of Catherine Malandrino top notes of pear and black currant. It reminds me of Flower Bomb kind of. It is so romantic and perfect for winter. I love LOVE IT! ($65-$110)

Well... If you have a little spare change from your taxes I recommend signing up for Birch box! Hey why not treat yourself to some amazing products without having to really leave your house to get them. Before you get your first box you customize your wants/needs and skin type on their website. So you can get what you are looking for each month.
